Advertising in Slovakia runs differently than in Austria. No ad tax, different language rules, different compliance regime. Honest overview for DACH advertisers.
Slovak Advertising Rules 2026: How They Differ from Austria
30-second takeaway: Slovakia has no advertising tax (Austria: 5%), stricter language requirements for mass-market ads, and different rules for misleading advertising, health claims, and comparative advertising. Expanding from AT to SK? Know these 4 points.
1. Advertising tax: AT 5%, SK 0%
The biggest underrated difference. Austria charges 5% advertising tax on paid advertising services — adyoutiser adds it automatically on bookings on Austrian screens. Slovakia has no equivalent.
A €5,000 Vienna campaign costs €250 extra. Bratislava: €0. On cross-border bookings, tax applies only to the AT portion — automatically calculated on our platform.
More detail on the Werbeabgabe page.
2. Language rules: SK stricter for mass-market
Slovakia's State Language Act requires mass-market advertising to be primarily in Slovak. English, German, and others are allowed — but the main message for the general public should be Slovak.
Works: multilingual tourism ads, B2B in English, brand names in any language. Problem: German or English mass-market at commuter sites without Slovak version.
3. Health claims, alcohol, gambling
Health claims are EU-regulated, but SK enforces stricter at national level. Functional foods, supplements, and cosmetics claims need local legal review before SK launch.
Alcohol: allowed with limits, school proximity matters. Gambling: SK has separate licensing for advertising providers.
4. Comparative and misleading advertising
Both follow EU directives. SK consumer protection authority (SOI) is more active on cross-border ads with price comparisons, "best in SK" claims, and comparisons against local competitors.

| Health claims | EU rule, AGES | EU rule, ÚVZ SR stricter |
| Alcohol DOOH | allowed with limits | allowed, school distance matters |
| Gambling | license required | separate SK license |
| Comparative ads | EU rule, KSchG | EU rule, SOI active |

- Verify alcohol/gambling licensing
- Substantiate comparative claims for SK market
- Brand name and USP can stay in EN/DE
