DOOH Sustainability: Energy Footprint and Eco-Branding

DOOH screens consume electricity. We give honest numbers for a 20-screen network and explain what "Eco-DOOH" should actually mean.

30-second takeaway: A typical DOOH screen draws 0.15–0.8 kWh per hour. A 20-screen network with 12 daily operating hours uses an estimated 15,000–44,000 kWh per year. Real eco-DOOH means documented power mix, brightness sensors, long hardware lifecycles, and passive cooling — not generic "carbon neutral" badges.

Why it matters

In 2026 more advertisers ask for sustainability data on their campaigns. Good. The downside: vendors that cannot deliver honest numbers get creative with labels like "carbon-neutral DOOH" without binding definitions.

What DOOH screens actually consume

  • 55–65" indoor: 80–180 W
  • High-brightness outdoor: 400–800 W
  • Large outdoor with weather housing: 600–1,500 W

A mixed 20-screen network operating ~12 h/day reaches an estimated 15,000–44,000 kWh/year (from datasheet values, not measured). A 4-person household uses 4,000–6,000 kWh/year. Per impression, DOOH is often more efficient than digital display once server and tracking costs are counted.

What real eco-DOOH should require

Documented power mix. Show the supply contract or guarantees-of-origin certificate.

Active brightness control. Outdoor screens should dim with ambient light via lux sensors.

Long hardware lifecycle. A screen replaced every 3 years has worse CO₂ economics than one running 8 years.

Passive thermal management. Outdoor cabinets with active AC are power-hungry.

What brands should avoid

Generic "carbon neutral" claims without certification. Compensation marketed as the main message instead of reduction. Whataboutism vs digital media.

What we see at adyoutiser

We market 20 screens (16 Vienna · 3 Bratislava · 1 Amstetten), many owned by partners who choose their own hardware. We use per-screen operating hours (not 24/7 by default) and transparent communication — no blanket "eco" badges we cannot audit.

See the DOOH glossary for terminology and the screens overview for actual operating hours per location.

How to vet a sustainable DOOH vendor

Three questions: Which power supplier and certificate? What brightness control? Average hardware age across the park? If the vendor dodges two of three, "eco" is a sticker.
