You don't need a designer or an Adobe license. With Canva and 30 minutes you build a DOOH spot that works on public screens. Templates and common mistakes included.
What you'll learn in 30 seconds: DOOH creatives under 10 seconds need three things: readable type, one clear CTA, and zero filler. Canva gets you there in 30 minutes — no designer, no stock-photo hell, no licensing pitfalls.
The biggest myth in outdoor advertising: "without an agency, the creative looks unprofessional." Wrong. Most agency creatives are over-designed, over-written, and unreadable from 5 meters in 3 seconds. What actually works on a public screen is something anyone can build in Canva.
Why DOOH creative differs from social ads
Forget Instagram carousels. On a public screen the rules are different. The viewer walks past — you have 2-3 seconds, not 10. Nobody scrolls back. Nobody zooms in. Nobody clicks.
Three hard laws:
Readability from 5 meters. Headline text needs to be at least 1/10 of screen height. In 1080p, that's 100px+.
Max one message. One headline, one visual, one CTA. "Sale now — up to 50% off — new collection — fashion week — limited" is noise, not a spot.
High contrast. Black on white beats every gradient. Pastel on pastel is unreadable.
The 7-step Canva walkthrough
-
New design (minute 0-2). Custom size 1080x1920 (vertical) or 1920x1080 (horizontal). Most of our Vienna and Bratislava screens are vertical.
-
Background (minute 2-5). Solid color or brand hex code. No gradients as pure background. Photo? Dark photo + light text overlay box.
-
Headline (minute 5-10). Bold sans-serif (Inter, Montserrat). Min 120px. Max 4 words.
-
Visual or logo (minute 10-15). One central visual. Logo top or bottom, never center. Canva Pro images or your own photos — no Google Image Search.
-
CTA (minute 15-20). One line at the bottom. "yourbrand.com/sale" or "Scan QR".
-
Animation (optional, 20-25). Subtle: fade-in headline, slow pan background. Don't animate everything.
-
Export (25-30). MP4 max 10 seconds, or JPG (auto-played as 10s still).
What never to do
- No tiny disclaimer text — put it on the landing page
- No naked QR codes — pair with a clear value headline
- No staged "diversity-theater" stock photos
- No looping logo animations — your logo communicates the brand, not entertainment
Example: 10-second café spot
- Sec 0-3: Black background, white headline "Breakfast until noon" (140px Inter Bold)
- Sec 3-7: Café logo appears, "Mariahilfer Straße 87" below
- Sec 7-10: Red box at bottom: "Today: omelet + coffee €7.90"
Three slides, one message per slide, readable from any distance, done in 25 minutes. Run the DOOH calculator before booking.
Get started
You don't need a designer for your first spot. You need Canva, a clear message, and 30 minutes. Tooling isn't the problem — most first attempts fail because of too much text, not too little design.
