Audio-DOOH sounds like more attention. In DACH it is legally risky, culturally unloved, and hard to measure. We explain why we say no.
30-second takeaway: Audio-DOOH (sound-enabled outdoor or indoor advertising) has three hard problems in DACH 2026: noise-emission regulation, low cultural acceptance, and weak measurability. We deliberately do not offer it and explain the reasons honestly rather than parking it in a fake roadmap.
What audio-DOOH is
Classic DOOH is visual — motion or still imagery without sound. Audio-DOOH adds an audible track: a voiceover on an indoor cafe screen, a jingle at a station screen, or a Bluetooth beacon pushing audio to passing phones.
In theory two senses get engaged. In practice DACH has three problems.
Problem 1: Noise regulation
Austria has a Lärmemissionsverordnung; Germany applies BImSchV with state-level rules; Switzerland is stricter. Outdoor audio advertising in a Vienna shopping street is rarely permissible without case-by-case approval.
Problem 2: Cultural acceptance is low
Many people who accept visual advertising at a location find audio in public space intrusive. The brand often loses image, not gains it.
Problem 3: Measurement is weak
Did the person actually hear the audio? Outdoor noise, background music, blocked beacons — the audio component is hard to isolate. Brands paying extra for audio attention often cannot verify it landed.
What we see at adyoutiser
20 screens (16 Vienna · 3 Bratislava · 1 Amstetten), all visual, no audio. Three reasons: legal certainty for our customers, brand protection (no risk of being perceived as intrusive), measurability (we deliver measured plays and your booked airtime share — no hand-waving on audio impact).
See the DOOH glossary for measurement specifics and screens overview for what we offer.
Where audio-DOOH CAN work
Closed locations with owner consent (gyms, gas stations, salons), event areas with clear temporary character (festivals), acoustically isolated waiting areas (doctor, lounge). For public or semi-public DOOH we advise against it in DACH 2026.
What brands should do instead
Stronger visual hooks (motion, contrast, 3-second message), time-of-day targeting, hyperlocal targeting. More at book advertising.
